23 Jul Huawei calls on Europe to „choose a smarter future“
Brussels, 23 July 2019
Europe’s new generation of policymakers must act to ensure technological innovation delivers progress for all, Huawei urged at an event in Brussels today. The company presented its latest position paper which focuses on ten digital challenges requiring particular attention from European decision makers and identifies practical solutions for tackling them.
The ten challenges highlighted in the paper include macro-economic reforms, ‘green’ digital, skills, the digital divide, 5G deployment, the role of telco operators, smart cities and connected driving, as well as AI and cybersecurity.
The paper, entitled “Choose a Smarter Future – a Contribution to Europe’s Next Digital Policy”, was presented during a debate held at the Huawei Cyber Security Transparency Centre in Brussels. As a global provider of end-to-end digital solutions with a significant presence in Europe, Huawei has a unique perspective to share with Europe’s newly elected representatives.
“Digital technologies are playing an increasingly important role in our lives. As Europe is deciding on a new policy architecture for the years to come, it must seize this strategic opportunity to create a framework that helps innovation deliver inclusive and sustainable progress,” said Detlef Eckert, Vice-President of Global Government Affairs at Huawei, who co-authored the document. “With this paper, we hope to provide novel insights and provoke thoughts about what will matter most and why.”
“By enabling cutting-edge technology such as the Internet of Things and machine-to-machine communications, 5G will enable new business cases – but only if the policy framework helps to leverage investments and drive deployment,” stressed J. Scott Marcus, Senior Fellow at Bruegel, who participated in today’s debate. “Policymakers have an important role to play in helping to release the power of innovation and making sure it is sustainable.”
